The Statistics of the Penitentiary Institution will be published as a news bulletin as of 2015 with the aim of reaching the public briefly earlier. In this news bulletin, the results of the 2010-2014 period and 2014 are included in the statistics field of the penitentiary institution.
Number of people in prison increased by 10.1%
As of 31 December 2014, the number of persons serving in the penal institution increased by 10.1% to 158 690 compared to the same date of 2013.

96.4% of those in prison were male.
As of 31 December 2014, 86% of the population of the penal institutions consisted of convicts and 14% of the prisoners. 96.4% of these people were men and 3.6% were women.
204 out of every 100 thousand people in the penitentiary institution
Every year the number of people in prison per capita hundred thousand people in Turkey to 163 as of December 31, while in 2010 this number increased continuously as the year has reached 204 in 2014. In contrast, 253 out of every hundred thousand people aged 12 and over took part in the penitentiary.
170 733 convicts entered the penal institutions in 2014
Taking into account one or more entry records of a convict in the same year, between 1 January and 31 December 2014, 170 733 convicts were registered at the penitentiaries. Considering one or more exit records of a convict in the same year, 135 784 convicts were registered between the same dates. 96.3% of the inmates entering and 96.4% of the outgoing convicts were male.

The most common crime committed by convicts was theft
In case the convicts entering the penal institution commit more than one crime, the offense requiring the most severe punishment is taken as the basis. When evaluated on this basis, 17.5% of the convicts who entered the penal institution between 1 January-31 December 2014 were stolen and i, wounding 8.2% of the Bankruptcy Act and 5.2% of the Bankruptcy Act committed murder.
31.6% of convicts were primary school graduates
When the convicts who entered the penal institution between January 1 and December 31, 2014 were evaluated according to the crime committed, 42.2% of the perpetrators of theft were primary school graduates, 20.7% were primary school graduates, 15.7% were literate and did not finish a school. 31.4% of the perpetrators of the crime of injury were primary, 26.4% were primary school, 20.7% were high school and equivalent vocational school graduates.
High school and higher education graduates constituted 26% of the perpetrators
28.1% of those who committed crimes against the Bankruptcy Law of Execution were high school and equivalent vocational schools, 27.5% were primary and 22.7% were convicts who graduated from primary education. While 27.7% of the perpetrators of murder crimes are primary school, 22.2% are high school and equivalent vocational schools, 21.8% are primary school graduates, 37.9% of those committing sexual crimes are primary and 21.8% are primary school. 18.2% of them were convicts with high school and equivalent vocational school graduates.
Higher education graduates most opposed to the Bankruptcy Law
When the convicts who entered the penal institution between 1 January - 31 December 2014 are evaluated according to their educational status; 35.1% of those who are literate and have not completed a school, 23.2% of primary school graduates, and 27.8% of illiterate individuals with theft crime; 15.9% among primary school graduates, 14.6% among secondary school and equivalent vocational school graduates, 15.8% among high school and equivalent vocational school graduates, and 16% of higher education graduates.

The data source of these statistics consists of the records of the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses. The data is compiled on a magnetic medium from the Ministry of Justice National Judicial Network Information System database.
The population of the penal institution is defined by two reference dates. Stock population; as of December 31, the total number of detainees and convicts in prison. Flow population; Persons who entered the penal institution in the status of convict between 1 January and 31 December and left the penal institution in the status of convict. Accordingly, if one person has made more than one entry / exit during the year, it is considered as a separate person at each entry / exit.
